Shifting Perspectives in Lex Barberio’s Ambisextrous Series

Softmotion collaborated with artist Lex Barberio to transform their Ambisextrous portrait series into a fine art installation using lenticular printing. The result was a set of interactive, multidimensional portraits that shift as viewers move, bringing themes of gender and identity to life in a way traditional formats can’t match.

Three colorful, contemporary portraits of people are displayed on a gray wall in a modern café with plants and simple tables and chairs. The art features dramatic, green and pink lighting on the subjects’ faces.

Lex Barberio is a queer artist from Miami whose work merges portrait photography, collage, and experimental printing techniques. For Ambisextrous, Lex sought to challenge perceptions of gender expression through visual storytelling. By incorporating Softmotion’s lenticular art expertise, each portrait becomes an evolving narrative—changing perspective as the viewer moves and revealing layers of personality, expression, and truth.

A modern, minimalist living room with large windows, white furniture, a gray rug, and two colorful portrait artworks on the wall. City buildings are visible outside, and the room connects to a bedroom area.

The installation combined lenticular portraits with precise production techniques, ensuring that the shifting visuals were crystal-clear from multiple vantage points. This fine art installation exemplifies how lenticular printing can elevate gallery work, making it more immersive, interactive, and emotionally resonant.

A modern office with desks, computers, and shelves, divided by a wall featuring a large, framed portrait of a person with wet hair and bare shoulders, touching their lips thoughtfully.

From gallery walls to public art, projects like Ambisextrous demonstrate the unique ability of Softmotion lenticular to transform static images into contemporary art installations that connect with audiences on a deeper level.

A woman with long, wavy hair holds her finger to her lips in a “shh” gesture. She is lit with dramatic pink and blue lighting and looks directly at the camera. The photo is framed and hangs on a wall.
A person stands in front of deep red, ruffled curtains, wearing a turquoise blazer with car graphics, a patterned black scarf around their neck, and black pants. They are looking off to the side and have short, dark hair.
